Ingredient X-ray
Salicylic Acid
A beta-hydroxy acid that dissolves oil and dead skin inside the pore, so it's the go-to for blackheads, congestion and oily-skin breakouts.

Not for
Pregnant or breastfeeding — use only on a doctor's say-so.
Ease into it
Introduce 2–3 nights a week; an acid every day on a new user usually means a stripped barrier, not faster results.
Don’t layer with Retinol, Glycolic Acid

First signs: 2–4 weeks. Real results: 8–12 weeks for congestion & blackheads. Reassess: No real change by 12 weeks → reassess with a dermatologist.
A mild purge early on is common. Daily use on a new user usually over-strips — start 2–3 nights a week.
Layering — what it pairs with, what it fights
✓ Niacinamide — calms the flush and supports the barrier while the acid works.
✓ Hyaluronic Acid — puts back the water an exfoliant can strip.
! Retinol — stacking two exfoliating actives in one routine is the classic over-exfoliation combo — alternate nights.
! Glycolic Acid — two acids at once multiplies irritation for little extra benefit.

Guidelines of care for the management of acne vulgaris ›
The American Academy of Dermatology's formal acne guideline — 18 evidence-based recommendations, graded by how certain the evidence is. Benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids get STRONG recommendations. Salicylic acid and azelaic acid get only CONDITIONAL ones, meaning the evidence behind them is weaker.
Management of Acne Vulgaris: A Review ›
A review of how acne is actually treated. Topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid are first-line. One randomised trial of 207 people found tretinoin 0.025% gel cut lesion counts by 63% at 12 weeks. Acne affects roughly 9% of people worldwide, and about 85% of 12–24 year-olds.
A systematic review and network meta-analysis of topical pharmacological, oral pharmacological, physical and combined treatments for acne vulgaris ›
The largest head-to-head comparison of acne treatments to date: 179 randomised trials and roughly 35,000 observations across 49 treatment classes. For mild-to-moderate acne, the most effective topical option was a retinoid combined with benzoyl peroxide.
