Morning use. A serum that's turned orange/brown has oxidised and lost potency — replace it.

The Roles of Vitamin C in Skin Health
Healthy skin is naturally rich in vitamin C, where it drives collagen production and helps defend against UV damage. The honest catch the authors raise: that biology is the rationale for putting it in creams, but how well topical vitamin C works — as opposed to simply eating enough of it — is poorly understood.

Skincare ingredients recommended by cosmetic dermatologists: A Delphi consensus study
62 dermatologists across 43 centres were asked which ingredients they actually recommend, and voted until they agreed. Consensus landed on 23 ingredients, including vitamin C for fine lines and dark spots, niacinamide for redness and dark spots, retinoids, azelaic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

A review of topical vitamin C derivatives and their efficacy
Pure vitamin C is unstable, so brands use chemically modified versions to help it survive the bottle and get through skin. This compares those derivatives — the point being they are not interchangeable, and stability and absorption differ between them.
