How long until it works

First signs: Dryness/flaking (and sometimes purging) in weeks 2–6. Real results: 12 weeks minimum; best gains around 6 months. Reassess: Give it a full 12 weeks before judging.

Night use only, SPF the next morning. Start twice a week — pushing harder early just means irritation, not faster results.

Human Skin Aging and the Anti-Aging Properties of Retinol
As skin ages, both layers thin, collagen falls and epidermal stem cells decline — which is what opens the door to a weakened barrier and slower healing. Topical retinoids showed promise for texture, fine lines, and thickening both the epidermis and dermis.

Retinoids in the treatment of skin aging: an overview of clinical efficacy and safety
Reviews the whole retinoid family for ageing skin. Tretinoin is the most potent and by far the most studied — but it's also the most irritating, and the authors are blunt that burning, scaling and dermatitis are what stop people using it. Retinol and retinaldehyde are considerably less irritating, which is why cosmetic products reach for them.

Skin ageing and topical rejuvenation strategies
Prescription tretinoin is described as the clinical 'gold standard' for topical rejuvenation, with cosmeceutical products sitting below it. Skin ageing is largely chronic sun exposure layered on top of ordinary time-dependent ageing.
